81-year-old handcuffed after confusing a traffic stop
On July 25, 2025, Hempstead County Deputy Jason Johnson stopped 81-year-old Olen Lane for alleged speeding on a county road. Bodycam shows Johnson immediately criticizing where Lane stopped, writing a speeding warning plus a seat-belt ticket, then exploding when the confused driver moved the car. Johnson demanded the keys, ordered Lane out, handcuffed him, used a slur the sheriff later called derogatory, shoved him into the cruiser, and said he had earned a trip to jail. Only after custody did Johnson ask about dementia. Backup learned of a stroke five years earlier and ongoing memory issues, uncuffed Lane, called his daughter, and asked for an ambulance check. Lane was cited for seat belt and fleeing but was not booked. Sheriff James Singleton terminated Johnson for conduct unbecoming.
